Filter Capture, Airflow and Pressure Are Different Questions
A filter has to capture the intended particles while working with the installed fan and housing. A rating, a clean appearance and a running fan each answer only part of that question.
Literature summary: MERV describes particle capture across specified particle-size ranges. It does not directly specify the pressure loss of a particular installed filter, the amount of outdoor air delivered or removal of every gaseous contaminant.
Media design, area, face velocity and loading affect resistance. Fan controls also matter: some systems lose airflow as resistance increases; others increase fan effort to maintain flow until their limits are reached. Poor fit can let air bypass the media.
Decision example — If airflow declines after a filter change, compare the old and new model, fit, pressure drop and operating state. Timing makes the filter a useful lead; it does not rule out a changed fan command, closed damper or another restriction.

What to record and compare
Record place, time, weather, occupancy, instrument and operating state. Keep observations separate from explanations.
01
GCT field method 1 — Record exact filter model, dimensions, capture rating, installation direction and replacement date, plus the equipment’s approved filter requirements.
02
GCT field method 2 — With authorized safe access, document fit and visible condition. Do not reach into operating equipment or open a pressurized cabinet casually.
03
GCT field method 3 — Ask the qualified provider to record pressure drop in Pa across the defined filter boundary, airflow and fan mode during the same test window.
04
GCT field method 4 — Compare pressure at comparable airflow, not just before/after calendar dates. Retain manufacturer test conditions and any missing baseline information.
05
GCT field method 5 — Verify both particle-control suitability and delivered airflow after the approved change. Record power only when actually measured; a fan command is not a power reading.

What is a MERV rating?
MERV describes particle capture in specified size ranges; Filter selection must be compatible with the fan and filter installation

High-MERV Filters
Particle capture and resistance to airflow are separate filter characteristics; General filter physics only: this residential guide does not supply universal commercial design limits
Filter access, contaminated media handling and fan adjustments require the applicable isolation, protective equipment and disposal procedures. Do not override safety interlocks or manufacturer operating limits.
