Commercial problem guide

The filter changed. Verify what else changed with it.

A close timing relationship deserves investigation. Preserve the old model information and compare operation under similar conditions before deciding whether the new filter, another restriction or a control change caused the complaint.

Recognize the pattern

  • Less delivered air after replacement
  • Fan sound or command changes
  • A pressure alarm or longer runtime appears

Systems that may be involved

  • Filter resistance, dimensions or loading
  • Installation orientation, sealing or housing fit
  • Fan control and available pressure capability
  • Other restrictions, dampers or return paths

First useful evidence

  • Old and new filter model and manufacturer requirements
  • Replacement time and comparable HVAC operating mode
  • Qualified filter pressure-drop and airflow measurements
  • Fit observations made under safe isolation

Expensive shortcuts to avoid

  • Running without the required filter as a permanent fix
  • Assuming a rating uniquely predicts resistance
  • Comparing pressure readings taken at different airflows

Questions worth separating

Does a higher MERV number always cause weak airflow?

No. Compare the particular filter’s resistance and the installed fan response.

Can I use the same size but any filter type?

Dimensions alone do not establish compatibility. Check the approved specification, fit and operating limits.

What evidence supports a correction?

A documented compliant filter installation plus measured acceptable airflow and pressure under the relevant mode.

What is a MERV rating?

MERV describes particle capture in specified size ranges; Filter selection must be compatible with the fan and filter installation
